Frequently asked questions

What rates apply to domestic passenger flights in 2026?

7.5% of the ticket revenue (the "percentage tax") plus $5.30 per flight segment per passenger (the "domestic segment tax"). Both go on Form 720 Part I, IRS No. 26. The $5.30 is the 2026 inflation-adjusted rate, up from $5.20 in 2025.

What rate applies to international flights?

$23.40 per passenger arriving in or departing the U.S. for international air travel (Form 720 IRS No. 27). The 2026 inflation-adjusted rate is up from $22.90 in 2025.

Why is the Alaska/Hawaii rate different?

Domestic segments beginning or ending in Alaska or Hawaii are subject to a reduced $11.70 per-departure tax under IRS No. 27 (applies only to departures, not arrivals). The 2026 rate is up from $11.40 in 2025.

What is the air cargo tax rate?

6.25% of amounts paid for transportation of property by air that begins and ends in the United States (Form 720 IRS No. 28). International cargo is generally exempt.

Does the segment fee apply to one-stop itineraries?

Yes. A "segment" is one takeoff and one landing. A passenger flying Chicago → Denver → Los Angeles (with a stop in Denver) generates two segments, so two $5.30 fees apply ($10.60 total). A nonstop Chicago → Los Angeles is one segment ($5.30).
